Abstract

The continuum damage mechanics approach is widely used to model damage growth in finite element analysis as an alternative to modeling discrete cracks in the mesh. It has been found that this approach often incorrectly predicts damage growth in composite materials which fail due to shear stress. The current work identifies a variety of cases which result in both correct and incorrect damage growth in an attempt to better understand why continuum damage mechanics models perform poorly under shear stress, as well as to explore ways these models may be improved to better predict damage growth in composites.
