Abstract
Accurate quantification of the true contact area formed between abutting solid surfaces is essential in understanding many tribological situations. So the methods of measurement and theoretical predictions for plastic and elastic contacts have been collated. Factors complicating the applications of predictive procedures are examined and key areas for future research are identified.
