Abstract

Present prediction techniques for sonar performance take into account acoustic-propagation conditions and signal-processing characteristics of the sonar system under consideration. These predictions are useful for technical comparisons of different systems, but they have not provided a useful prediction of performance for the user of a given system. A more useful prediction technique has been developed, which includes man-machine interactions relating to operator proficiency and tactical constraints that affect allowed times for detection, classification, track, and attack. Taking these factors into account in predicting over-all system performance provides answers much nearer to those realized in the fleet.
