Abstract

Samples of leaf litter and soil to a depth of 1 cm were taken from two lowveld citrus production regions in Zimbabwe and two other sites in the Mpumalanga lowveld of South Africa. One site in each country had received no full cover pesticide sprays for several years (biocontrol) whereas the other sites were under Integrated Pest Management (IPM). Erythraeid mites were only found at the two biocontrol sites and stigmaeids at the IPM sites. Species found at more than two of the four sites included: Anystidae: Erythracarus sp., Cheyletidae: Hemicheyletia bakeri (Ehara), Cunaxidae: Neocunaxoides rykei Den Heyer, Laelapidae: Laelaspis sp. nr. vitzthumi, Phytoseiidae: Neoseiulus barkeri Hughes and Proprioseiopsis pascuus (Van der Merwe). The possible value of these predators as natural enemies of citrus thrips, Scirtothrips aurantii Faure, is discussed.
