Abstract
Results from recent measurements made with the National Research Council 3.1‐cm dual‐channel polarization diversity radar are presented and related to the precipitation form. The paper also includes some results previously obtained at 1.8 cm wavelength. The use of intrinsic polarization characteristics for precipitation particle identification is demonstrated. Propagation effects, and the way in which they may be used to assist in the identification process, are also discussed. A qualitative classification chart relating the polarization characteristics to precipitation type is presented.
