Abstract

A hospital in-patient died 7 days after administration of radioiodine for treatment of thyroid cancer. Radioiodine is widely used in treatment of thyroid cancer, but death of a patient shortly after treatment is very unusual. This presented a number of challenging radiation protection issues including: dealing with staff involved with the care of the patient before and after death; and advising on release of the body for burial or cremation. Dose rate measurements were performed at a number of time points and used to inform a risk assessment.
