Abstract
Melanocytic tumours are arguably the most important aspect of dermatopathology. This course will cover a range of issues encountered in the practice of surgical pathology related to melanocytic lesions. Laboratory issues such as embedding and fixation artifacts, topics not commonly discussed in textbooks, will be addressed. In addition, other situations that cause diagnostic difficulty will be discussed, including margin assessment in sun damaged skin, naevi that histologically mimic melanoma, naevoid melanoma, and desmoplastic melanoma. A practical approach and strategies to resolve the differential diagnosis will be emphasised.
