Abstract
Postmodernist theoreticians have offered a powerful critique of psychiatry which they see as a modernist enterprise, born at the time of the European Enlightenment and currently operating under the aegis of evidence-based medicine. However, whilst their opposition to the view that there are objective truths about persons preserves the importance of the subjective, meaning making individual mind, collapsing the distinction between the subjective and the objective loses the reality of the personhood about which they are rightly concerned.
