Abstract

SUMMARY In summary, the last decade has seen an increasing awareness of the seriousness of posterior urethral injury associated with pelvic fracture. Treatment, both primary and secondary, for the frequently associated stricture remains controversial. We have no quarrel with those who prefer primary realignment if in their hands a satisfactory result can be anticipated. Our dedicated pursuit of the Johanson technique was prompted by less than satisfactory results with primary realignment. After more than 10 years, the results in maintaining a stricture-free urethra with minimal incidence of incontinence and impotence lend support to continuation of this program.
