Abstract

Definitions are provided for terms related to the pain of amputation. The anatomy, physiology, and mechanisms of postamputation pain are explored, with emphasis on the differentiation of stump pain from phantom-limb phenomena of all types and degrees. Medical, physical, electrical stimulation, neurosurgical, psychologic, and anesthetic approaches to the treatment of phantom pain are detailed. A new theoretical approach to phantom pain is presented, along with preliminary results of a prophylactic approach to phantom pain.
