Abstract

(Int J Obstet Anesth. 2015;24:272–275) Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) occurs in 1% to 2% of women following childbirth and is associated with subjective distress in labor, obstetric emergencies, trait anxiety, and a history of psychological problems. PTSD itself is also a risk factor for the development of depressive and psychiatric disorders, and suicide remains a leading cause of maternal death. The rewind technique, in combination with hypnosis, is a specific treatment for PTSD. Patients are asked to rapidly fast-forward and rewind images associated with the event, to allow for reframing the event as nonthreatening. Currently, there are no reports focusing on the rewind technique and hypnosis as treatments for this disorder in the medical literature. In this present report, the authors describe 2 obstetric patients presenting with PTSD who underwent hypnosis with or without the rewind technique.
