Abstract

Abstract This chapter uses Marguerite Porete’s The Mirror of Simple Souls as a springboard for a discussion of the nature of spiritual ascent and the doctrines of heaven and hell. The first section introduces Porete’s The Mirror of Simple Souls and places it in its historical context. The second section explicates the seven stages of spiritual progress described by Porete. The third section explores the philosophical implications of the doctrine of heaven focusing in particular on the question of whether or not the doctrine of heaven is fair. The fourth section does the same for the doctrine of hell but considers also raises the question: what might be the point of hell? Two broad responses to that question are explicated.
