Abstract
In Morocco, medicinal plants are widely used because of their availability, accessibility, and the general public's impression that these remedies are harmless. However, the indiscriminate use of plant agents can lead to serious side effects and even death. Papaver somniferum (opium poppy) is commonly used for its therapeutic properties, as well as for its sedative effects. We report the case of a two-month-old infant who developed respiratory distress and hypotonia after his mother administered an oral preparation of opium poppy to calm him and help him sleep at a family party. The infant recovered well with early supportive and antidotal treatment. This case is reported for three reasons:To draw attention to these widespread dangerous practices among parents in order to make them aware of the risks that may endanger the lives of their children. To alert healthcare professionals to the potential exposure to such substances, which should be considered in cases of unexplained distress in newborns or infants. To highlight the importance of the availability and rapid administration of antidotal treatment.
