Abstract

Polysaccharides have abundant functions and roles in the living body. This chapter introduces several types of natural-based polysaccharides and synthetic polysaccharides with classification. Additionally, the strategy and advantages of polysaccharides-based drug delivery applications are described. Especially, natural-based polysaccharides are mainly utilized in drug loading purposes like nano/micro-gel and/or injectable hydrogel with great advantages such as biocompatibility, stability, and workability. On the other hand, several instances of synthetic polysaccharides (and glycopolymer) based drug delivery applications are also referred with practical benefits. Both polysaccharides-based drug delivery systems provide the improvement of pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics for multitype drugs, especially, highly sophisticated polysaccharides (glycopolymer) indicated advanced functions (e.g. stimuli responsiveness) to drug delivery applications. This chapter introduces these advanced strategies and comprehensively reviews the biological/physical properties of polysaccharides established by many predecessor researchers.
