Abstract

C57BL/6J, CBA, DBA/2 and BALB/c mice were investigated with regard to ‘centromeric inversions’ and differences in the amount of centromeric heterochromatin on particular chromosomes. Contrary to what has previously been assumed, apparent inversions within the centromeric region of the mouse chromosomes seem to be a relatively common phenomenon. All four strains showed one or two ‘centromeric inversions’ in their chromosome complement. The karyotypes of all four strains were also sufficiently different to be distinguished by the present method. The centromeric region of chromosomes 1, 6 and X of CBA mice (which were originally obtained from a cross in 1920, Bagg albino DBA) appear cytologically as if they were derived from BALB/c. whereas the centromeric regions of chromosomes 7, 13 and 14 apparently derive from the DBA parent.
