Abstract

Phosgenation of 2,2′-dihydroxyphenyl in homogeneous solution yields mixtures of the monomeric and oligomeric carbonates, in particular the dimer. Good yields of the monomer were obtained by thermal trans esterification of 0,0′-bismethoxycarbonyl-2,2′-dioxybiphenyl. All attempts to polymerize the monomeric cyclocarbonate anionically in solution failed. Bulk polymerization at 100° or 160° with tributyltin methoxide or zinc stearate yielded crystalline polycarbonates of low molecular weight. The potassium carbonate initiated polymerization above 200° is accompanied by a Kolbe-type rearrangement of CO 2 so that amorphous copoly(ester-carbonate)s are formed.
