Abstract

The kinetics of radical polymerization of acrylamide in emulsions obtained by dispersion of aqueous solutions of the monomer in a cyclohexane solution of sorbital S-20 emulsifier are studied. The effective polymerization activation energy is 87·7 kJ/mole. It is shown that polymerization is accompanied by alkaline hydrolysis. The rate and degree of hydrolysis are in versely related to the concentration of acrylamide and directly related to the K2S2O8 concentration and the temperature. The viscosity-average MM of the polymer is enhanced with polymerization time before introduction of alkali and with decrease in K2S2O8 concentration and the total concentration of the components of the redox system.
