Abstract

A novel method of combining sol–gel and hydrothermal-assisted processes was developed to synthesize poly(ethyleneimine)-functionalized silica-supported organic–inorganic hybrid sorbents with high adsorption capacity. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and nitrogen gas sorption were utilized to characterize the hybrid sorbents. Poly(ethyleneimine)-functionalized hybrid sorbents had high static adsorption capacity of 91.5 mg g−1 for Pb(II) ions, displayed stable adsorption in the range of pH 4–8, offered a fast rate, and reached an equilibrium within 20 min.
