Abstract

Politics has become another part of the Society of the Spectacle. In addition, politicians, with their public behaviour and their declarations, contribute to the media spectacle, just as much as celebrities, sports people and pop singers. With the Obama campaign, a new political scenario has come into play, one dominated by new technologies and, most of all, by the Internet that has substituted the previous scenario dominated by television and conventional media. In the first part of this essay, two fetish terms in this new public space are analysed: “connection” and “transparency”. The second part of the essay is a review of the three basic parts of the political sphere: voters, the political system and leaders. Finally, details are given of the main characteristics of the current political leaders.
