Abstract

When a low-pressure sample of HCN is photolyzed by unpolarized by Lyman-α radiation, the resulting CN (BX) violet emission is polarized. The degree of polarization is 0.023 ± 0.005 for HCN and 0.041 ± 0.011 for DCN. Comparison with their VUV absorption spectra indicates that photodissociation proceeds via the predissociative (1π) 3 3sσ Rydberg state.
