Abstract

We have investigated the polarized emission from Ag−; centers in CsBr and CsI single crystals with CsCl structure. Azimuthal dependences of the degree of polarization for the C emission reveal that the relaxed lattice configuration of the 1T1u state in both crystals has tetragonal symmetry due to the static Jahn-Teller effect. The degree of polarization decreases with increasing excitation energy and temperature. These behaviours can be qualitatively explained by the adiabatic potential energy surface of the 1T1u excited electronic state in the two-dimensional Eg configuration coordinate subspace.
