Abstract
AbstractWe aim to examine the impact of a point‐of‐care (POC)‐activated system on time and cost requirements, as compared with a conventional intravenous admixture system. Time spent on intravenous piperacillin‐tazobactam administration before and after implementation of the POC‐activated system (Mini‐bag Plus®) was measured. Resource cost difference was calculated based on the difference in required manpower and material costs. The POC‐activated system reduced IV administration time by 58% (36.7 min versus 15.4 min before and after the implementation of the POC‐activated system (p < 0.05)). The total number of drugs prepared using the POC‐activated system at our institution was estimated to be 215 920 in 2015. This translates to a total nursing time saving of 76 651.6 h and resource cost saving of SGD 3 884 400. A user satisfaction survey showed that users welcomed the POC‐activated system, due to its ease of use and safety benefits. A POC‐activated system offers significant benefits over the conventional IV admixture system in terms of nursing time and cost savings, as well as improved safety.
