Abstract

Spontaneous pneumomediastinum (SPM) is a disease that is defined by the non-traumatic leakage of air to the mediastinum in subjects without previous pulmonary disease. It is a rather rare entity which manifests predominantly in young adults being less common its diagnostic in pediatric age. The following case is about a 13-year-old male, previously healthy, that develops precordial pain a day after a strenuous physical exercise session. His physical examination includes palpable crepitus and chest radiography shows signs of extensive SPM. Being stable and asymptomatic, he was discharged after 2 days in the hospital. A review of the literature on this pathology will be also made.
