Shelly Ibbotson Diabetes Specialist Practice Nurse, General Practice Nursing, North Lincolnshire Playing your part General practice has been the focus of the current health reforms, and with little over a month to go until PCT organizations close and clinical commissioning groups (CCGs) take over, many practice nurses will be aware that practice nurse support and adviser roles may have changed as a result of these reforms. Some of these roles have been retained and moved into the new organizations including CCGs; for others, the role has disappeared altogether. It is important for practice nurses to be aware of what is happening in their CCG and identify who the leads are that will be supporting practice nurses. It has been recommended that every CCG should have an executive nurse on its board. Practice nurses will need to be aware who this nurse is as this post will be key to ensuring that their profession is supported in the future. The report of the Mid Staffordshire NHS Foundation Trust Inquiry (2013) identifies, among many issues, failings in the nursing profession. The Francis Report is both sobering and shocking. It paints a poor picture of some nurses and how they failed to meet the needs of patients. Although these care failings took place in a hospital, the report provides an opportunity for all nurses to reflect and learn. The first of the 290 recommendations states:
