Abstract

This paper shows the effect of graphitic character of mesoporous carbons (MCs) on the performances of MC supported catalysts for direct methanol fuel cells (DMFC). Two MC samples with hexagonal mesostructure were prepared from dextrose and soluble starch by nanoreplication method using mesoporous silica as a template. Structural characterizations revealed that both MCs exhibited large surface area and uniform mesopores. The Pt nanoparticles were supported on both MCs with very high dispersion, as the particle size was estimated under 3 nm. The MC supported Pt catalysts exhibited much higher performance, which may be attributed to the high surface area and uniform mesopore networks of MC. Catalytic performance towards ORR was compared with commercial carbon (Vulcan XC-72).
