Platform Paratext: Reading Amazon Book Product Pages
Abstract: Digital technologies have transformed reading experiences, from the formats we read, the hardware we use, and the ways we approach texts. The technical inability to separate ebooks from the platforms on which they are sold, distributed and accessed renders these dot.com domains important sites of paratext and the information etched into them part of the interpretive experience of the text. Building on scholarship that updates paratext theory for the digital age, this article theorizes platform paratext and examines resultant changes to the authorization, locality and functionality of paratext due to platformization. Using a grounded theory approach and drawing on a sample of 40 Amazon product pages of romance and bestselling titles, it explores how platforms’ affordances, interface design and algorithms contribute to new forms of paratext and modify and mediate author, publisher and user-generated paratext. Platform paratext on Amazon product pages demonstrate the influence of algorithms, datafication and commercial imperatives on the production and manifestation of paratext.

This paper proposes Foucauldian discourse analysis as a critical methodology for examining the digitalisation of education, drawing on empirical material from a Swedish educational context. Using Foucault’s concept of problematisation, the study examines how digital technologies are constructed discursively across educational policy documents, media texts and empirical data from interviews, surveys and classroom observations. The analysis identifies various discursive formations, such as professionalisation, individualisation, technological determinism, efficiency, modernity and democratisation, which shape the conditions for education in different ways. Key findings reveal that digital resources are often constructed as the individual responsibility of teachers; as tools for individualised learning; as market products that enhance efficiency; and as both modernising and potentially harmful forces. These constructions risk fostering isolation among teachers and students, instrumentalising educational processes and reinforcing commercial and technological imperatives at the expense of pedagogical and democratic values. The study demonstrates that Foucauldian discourse analysis can identify discourses in different practices, thereby highlighting the contingent and political nature of digitalisation in education. By problematising assumptions that are generally accepted as truth, this approach opens up possibilities for alternative ways of thinking and acting within educational practices, moving beyond dichotomised debates.

This study examines the theoretical foundations and practical implementation of the project-based approach in preparing bachelors of professional education (digital technologies) for user interface design. The multidimensional nature of user interface design competence necessitates an innovative methodological framework that integrates theoretical knowledge with practical experience through authentic project activities. The purpose of the research is to substantiate theoretically and methodologically the system of training bachelors of professional education for user interface design based on the project approach. The methodological foundation comprises the conceptual provisions of project-based and system-synergetic approaches, competency-oriented education theory, human-centered interface design concepts, and the systematic approach to educational research. The study employs both theoretical methods (analysis, synthesis, comparison, systematization, modeling) and empirical methods (observation, questionnaires, expert evaluation) to investigate the effectiveness of project-based learning in developing user interface design competencies. Results demonstrate that project-based learning creates an optimal educational environment for developing the complex professional competencies required for interface design. The matrix of professional competencies for user interface design is developed, incorporating technological-instrumental, design-aesthetic, cognitive-ergonomic, project-methodological, communicative, and pedagogical dimensions. The research substantiates the effectiveness of four complementary instructional models (problem-based, design-based, team-based, and research-based) and structures the project activities into phases with corresponding evaluation criteria. Interdisciplinary projects are identified as the foundation for integrating pedagogical and technological paradigms, ensuring the holistic development of professional expertise. Practical implications include methodological recommendations for implementing the project-based approach in digital educational environments and developing specialized competencies in user interface design. The original contribution of this research lies in conceptualizing the interdisciplinary synergy model that demonstrates the mechanisms of emergent educational system properties at the intersection of different knowledge domains, ensuring the integrative formation of professional competencies.

BackgroundLoneliness among older adults has become a major public health concern associated with cognitive decline, depression, and increased health care use. The advancement of digital health technologies such as wearable devices, smart home systems, and mobile health apps provides new opportunities to monitor and mitigate loneliness through continuous physiological and behavioral assessment. However, the effectiveness of such technologies largely depends on user interface design, ensuring that older adults can understand, trust, and comfortably engage with the technology. Existing research on interactive platforms and user interfaces for psychological and emotional monitoring has mainly focused on usability testing and technology feasibility, with limited attention to structured design frameworks that integrate psychological, emotional, and accessibility dimensions for older adults. Furthermore, most studies rely on qualitative assessments and lack quantitative prioritization of design indicators.ObjectiveThis study aimed to build on the DELONELINESS (Design for Healthy Ageing: a Smart System to Decrease Loneliness for Older People) system to develop a user-centered hierarchical framework of interface design indicators for older adults.MethodsA mixed methods design was applied, integrating literature search, qualitative focus group analysis, and expert consultation to build an initial indicator pool. A hierarchical indicator structure with 7 first-level and 26 second-level indicators was developed. The analytic hierarchy process was used to assign indicator weights through surveys of 20 experts with academic or professional experience in human-computer interaction, digital health, gerontology, and health informatics. Based on the weighted results, 3 interface design solutions were developed and comparatively evaluated using the Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution.ResultsAll expert judgment matrices satisfied the analytic hierarchy process consistency requirement (consistency ratio <0.1). The Kendall coefficient of concordance indicated good agreement among experts for both first-level indicators (W=0.313; P<.001) and second-level indicators (W=0.156; P<.001). Among the 7 first-level indicators, trust and safety (weight=0.206), ease of use (weight=0.187), and accessibility (weight=0.167) received the highest weights, indicating their importance in enhancing user confidence and engagement. Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution evaluation results showed that design solution 2 achieved the highest overall performance score (relative closeness coefficient C=0.877), emphasizing clear interaction pathways, visual clarity, and guided feedback as key factors for optimal usability.ConclusionsThis study developed a user-centered framework for interface design in loneliness monitoring among older adults by integrating user insights, literature-derived indicators, and expert consensus, and providing a structured data-driven approach to prioritizing design requirements. The proposed framework bridges subjective user experience with objective evaluation, offering practical guidance for developing empathetic, inclusive, and trustworthy digital mental health technologies for older adults.
