This study aims to scrutinize the characteristics of the 100 most cited articles concerning the immediate placement of dental implants. Employing a specific search strategy comprising keywords and Boolean operators, we conducted a comprehensive search in the Web of Science database in January 2024. The identified articles were then arranged in descending order based on their citation counts. Two researchers meticulously gathered information on the number and density of citations, publication year and journal, study design, authorship and affiliations, keywords, as well as the country and continent of origin. Bibliometric maps were constructed using VOSviewer. The citations for the selected articles ranged from 76 to 569, spanning the publication years 1994 to 2018. Clinical Oral Implants Research emerged as the most frequently referenced journal, accounting for 30% of the publications. Interventional studies constituted the majority (29%) of the articles. Buser D and Lang NP were the most prolific authors, each contributing 11% of the published articles. The University of Bern had a total representation of 10%. The United States garnered significant attention at 20%, while Europe emerged as the predominant continent, constituting 46% of the publications. VOSviewer maps illustrated a convergence of authorship. The 100 most cited articles on immediate implant placement predominantly originated from authors in the United States, emphasizing Clinical Oral Implants Research as a notable outlet featuring observational studies. Background/Objectives: Despite advances in diagnosis and treatment, colorectal cancer (CRC) remains one of the most prevalent and challenging malignancies worldwide. The dysregulation of microRNAs (miRNAs) has emerged as a critical factor in CRC onset, progression, and therapeutic resistance. This study aims to provide an overview of global research trends on miRNAs in CRC, (i) identifying the most studied miRNAs, (ii) exploring under-investigated areas, and (iii) highlighting emerging themes and potential future directions. Methods: To assess the evolution of the global miRNA-CRC research trends, we conducted a bibliometric analysis of 828 CRC-miRNA-focused articles published between 2008 and 2024, sourced from the Scopus database. Bibliometric mapping was performed using the R/Bibliometrix package and by leveraging a customized Python-based pipeline, which is useful for extracting and validating miRNA identifiers (miRNA IDs) based on the miRBase database. This miRNA ID-related approach enabled us to systematically identify the most frequently studied miRNAs over time while highlighting underexplored miRNA. Results: The analysis revealed a substantial and accelerating publication growth rate, delineating three major phases in CRC-miRNA research. China emerged as the leading contributor in terms of the publication volume. miR-21, miR-34a, and miR-195-5p were among the most frequently studied miRNAs, underscoring their relevance to CRC biology and therapy. Keyword and citation analyses identified key thematic areas, such as cell proliferation, epithelial-mesenchymal transition, and chemoresistance, especially to oxaliplatin and 5-fluorouracil. Emerging research frontiers included ferroptosis, ceRNA networks, and exosome-mediated miRNA transport. An analysis of the collaborations indicated strong intra-national collaborations, with room for expanding international research networks. Conclusions: This study provides an in-depth bibliometric landscape of the CRC-related miRNA research by highlighting influential studies and journals while identifying gaps and underexplored topics. These insights offer valuable guidance for future translational and clinical research on this topic.

The European Society of Paediatric Radiology (ESPR) research committee was established to initiate, drive forward and foster excellence in paediatric imaging, paediatric image-guided intervention and radiation protection research, by facilitating more evidence-based standards, protocols and multi-institutional collaborations. The ESPR Strategic Research Agenda outlines our current research approach, highlighting several areas of paediatric imaging where the society can help guide current and future research, and emphasizing those areas where early research (“seed”) funding may need to be allocated by this and other societies as precursors to larger grant applications. The key aims are to evaluate normal variation in order to be able to confidently diagnose disease states, develop robust image-based classification systems to aid diagnosis and treatment monitoring, and help develop evidence-based clinical guidelines using current literature and experience to identify knowledge gaps. For this reason, the development of evidence-based imaging pipelines, broken down step-by-step to include diagnosis, classification and clinical effectiveness, should be the end goal for each disease entity for each affected child. Here, we outline the 2019 ESPR Strategic Research Agenda along three points in the clinical imaging pipeline: clinical referral, disease diagnosis and evolution, and clinical therapeutic evaluation and effectiveness. Through multicentre trials, using existing high-level experience and expertise, and nurturing the next generation of researchers, we will be able to achieve these aims.

Background Inborn errors of immunity (IEI) (previously known as primary immunodeficiency) are genetically defined immune disorders that have seen accelerated growth in both research and clinical attention. The genomic era and evolving classification frameworks have transformed the field, making it necessary to map its development, key contributors, and thematic shifts. Objective To conduct a bibliometric analysis of global IEI research from 1995 to 2025, identifying emerging trends, influential authors, key institutions, and gaps in regional representation. Methods A literature search was conducted using the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC) and PubMed databases, limited to English-language publications between 1995 and 2025. Search terms included combinations of genetic- and immune-related keywords such as “monogenic disorder,” “gene mutation,” “SCID,” “PID,” and “inborn errors of immunity.” After applying defined inclusion and exclusion criteria, a total of 840 original research articles were selected from an initial 1,236. Bibliometric mapping and visualization were performed using Bibliometrix via Shiny in R Studio and VOSviewer to analyze co-authorship networks, keyword co-occurrence, and thematic evolution. Results IEI-related publications have increased steadily, with an annual growth rate of 4.5% and a notable surge between 2020 and 2023. The United States, Iran, France, and Germany emerged as leading contributors, with high-impact institutions such as the NIH, Harvard University, and Université Paris Cité playing prominent roles. Among Islamic and Arabic countries, Iran and Turkey demonstrated increasing publication activity, though overall citation impact remained relatively low. Kuwait stood out with a higher average citation rate (23.8), indicating strong influence despite a smaller volume of output. An overlay visualization of international co-authorship networks confirmed the dominance of the United States and Western Europe as central hubs. However, countries like Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Morocco, and Iran showed a rise in research participation and collaboration since 2018, reflecting growing engagement from several Islamic and Arabic nations, particularly through partnerships with European institutions. Thematic mapping revealed newborn screening and hematopoietic stem cell transplantation as central, well-developed motor themes, reflecting their critical and evolving role in the field. Foundational but less developed topics included common variable immunodeficiency, whole-exome sequencing, and genetic diagnostics, indicating their broad relevance yet ongoing maturation. Notably, post-2018 research trends demonstrated a pronounced shift toward precision diagnostics, highlighted by the growing prominence of next-generation sequencing and other genomic technologies. Conclusion Over the past three decades, IEI research has undergone a transformative shift from phenotype-based classification to genomics-driven approaches, mirrored by the increasing integration of precision diagnostics and translational priorities such as newborn screening and hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, now identified as active and well-developed motor themes. Thematic mapping confirmed the centrality of these evolving domains while also highlighting common variable immunodeficiency (CVID) and whole-exome sequencing as foundational but less developed areas, underscoring ongoing gaps in their clinical translation and research density. Despite substantial progress, disparities in research output and visibility persist across regions. While institutions in established research hubs continue to lead global collaborations, a notable rise in contributions from Arabic and Islamic countries signals a meaningful shift. These emerging efforts are particularly valuable for uncovering underrepresented IEI subtypes linked to consanguinity and region-specific genetic profiles, addressing critical gaps in both global datasets and regional clinical relevance. Sustaining this momentum demands targeted investment in diagnostic infrastructure, inclusive research policies, and equitable collaboration frameworks. Broadening participation from underrepresented regions is not only a matter of global equity but a necessary step toward capturing the full spectrum of IEI diversity.

Miniaturization has emerged as a major technological trajectory in robotic surgery, encompassing single-port systems, flexible endoscopic platforms, capsule robotics, and microrobots designed to reduce surgical trauma and improve procedural precision. Despite rapid growth in this area, no previous bibliometric study has comprehensively mapped miniaturization as an integrated technological and clinical evolution across robotic surgery. Therefore, this study aimed to systematically analyze the global research landscape, collaboration patterns, thematic evolution, and emerging technological trends in miniaturized robotic surgery using advanced bibliometric and science-mapping approaches. A bibliometric analysis of 1,775 original articles indexed in the Elsevier Scopus database between 1996 and 2026 was conducted using Bibliometrix, VOSviewer, and CiteSpace to evaluate publication trends, collaboration networks, thematic evolution, citation bursts, and emerging technological trajectories. The literature demonstrated rapid expansion, with an annual growth rate of 17.1%, involving 6,293 authors across 492 sources and an international collaboration rate of 21.93%. The United States dominated scientific productivity and citation impact, followed by China, South Korea, Italy, and Germany. Thematic and cluster analyses identified robotic surgery, single-port systems, minimally invasive surgery, and medical robotics as the principal research domains. Citation-burst and trending-topic analyses revealed a temporal transition from capsule endoscopy, image-guided systems, and flexible robotics toward clinically deployable single-port robotic surgery, da Vinci SP platforms, partial nephrectomy, and postoperative pain. Highly cited studies emphasized continuum robotics, magnetic actuation, microrobotics, and biohybrid robotic systems, highlighting increasing convergence between robotic surgery, biomedical engineering, artificial intelligence, and nanotechnology. Miniaturization has evolved into a mature and rapidly expanding research domain characterized by strong technological convergence and increasing clinical translation. Current trends indicate a shift from feasibility-driven innovation toward intelligent, precision-oriented, and patient-centered robotic interventions.

This review summarizes six decades of clinical outcome research relevant to evidence-based practices for depression and anxiety delivered via clinical videoconferencing. The authors conducted a literature search of previous systematic reviews and an updated search of publications specific to anxiety and depression. Overall, strong evidence supports the safety and clinical effectiveness of administering evidence-based psychotherapy for anxiety and depression via clinical videoconferencing among heterogeneous populations and age ranges, and in multiple care settings, with similar outcomes to in-person care. Despite the overall clinical effectiveness of the modality, the authors discuss common logistical and institutional barriers to long-term effective implementation. Future systems-level research is required to investigate replicable and sustainable models for implementing and expanding access to evidence-based psychotherapies via clinical videoconferencing.

Clinical research is the foundation for advancing the practice of medicine. However, the lack of seamless integration between clinical research and patient care workflow impedes recruitment efficiency, escalates research costs, and hence threatens the entire clinical research enterprise. Increased use of electronic health records (EHRs) holds promise for facilitating this integration but must surmount regulatory obstacles. Among the unintended consequences of current research oversight are barriers to accessing patient information for prescreening and recruitment, coordinating scheduling of clinical and research visits, and reconciling information about clinical and research drugs. We conclude that the EHR alone cannot overcome barriers in conducting clinical trials and comparative effectiveness research. Patient privacy and human subject protection policies should be clarified at the local level to exploit optimally the full potential of EHRs, while continuing to ensure participant safety. Increased alignment of policies that regulate the clinical and research use of EHRs could help fulfill the vision of more efficiently obtaining clinical research evidence to improve human health.

An increasing number of economic evaluations are being conducted alongside clinical trials. While this practice offers the prospect of collecting comprehensive and accurate cost data, it requires considerable time and effort. In the case of clinical data, key analytic decisions such as which data to collect and sample size are often made with reference to smaller (pilot) trials. However, this approach is not normally followed in the case of economic evaluation. This study was based on a recently completed health technology assessment comparing conventional radiotherapy with continuous hyperfractionated accelerated radiotherapy (CHART) for patients with head and neck cancer or carcinoma of the bronchus. In the full health technology assessment, cost data were available for 526 head and neck patients (314 CHART and 212 conventional therapy) and 286 bronchus patients (175 CHART and 109 conventional therapy). In order to simulate a pilot study, data were extracted for the patients recruited to both trials in the first 3 months. These were then compared with the full data set in order to assess whether such a pilot study would have given useful guidance on: a) the usefulness of undertaking a full study; b) the sample size required; and c) the important resource items for which comprehensive data collection would be required. Pilot studies can be helpful in determining the likely advantages of undertaking full economic evaluations and in identifying important resource items. Therefore, it is important that clinical researchers and research funding bodies create the necessary time window to enable such studies to take place. However, formal sample size calculations are more difficult to perform on limited data, since they also require knowledge of the unit cost (or prices) to be attached to the resource items and the correlation between costs and clinical effects.

BackgroundDecades of clinical research have demonstrated the efficacy of lithium in treating acute episodes (both manic and depressive), as well as in preventing recurrences of bipolar disorder (BD). Specific to lithium is its antisuicidal effect, which appears to extend beyond its mood-stabilizing properties. Lithium’s clinical effectiveness is, to some extent, counterbalanced by its safety and tolerability profile. Indeed, monitoring of lithium levels is required by its narrow therapeutic index. There is consensus that adequate serum levels should be above 0.6 mEq/L to achieve clinical effectiveness. However, few data support the choice of this threshold, and increasing evidence suggests that lithium might have clinical and molecular effects at much lower concentrations.ContentThis narrative review is aimed at: (1) reviewing and critically interpreting the clinical evidence supporting the use of the 0.6 mEq/L threshold, (2) reporting a narrative synthesis of the evidence supporting the notion that lithium might be effective in much lower doses. Among these are epidemiological studies of lithium in water, evidence on the antisuicidal, anti-aggressive, and neuroprotective effects, including efficacy in preventing cognitive impairment progression, Alzheimer’s disease (AD), and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), of lithium; and (3) revieweing biological data supporting clinically viable uses of lithium at low levels with the delineation of a mechanistic hypothesis surrounding its purported mechanism of action. The study selection was based on the authors’ preference, reflecting the varied and extensive expertise on the review subject, further enriched with an extensive pearl-growing strategy for relevant reviews and book sections.ConclusionsClinical and molecular effects of lithium are numerous, and its effects also appear to have a certain degree of specificity related to the dose administered. In sum, the clinical effects of lithium are maximal for mood stabilisation at concentrations higher than 0.6 mEq/l. However, lower levels may be sufficient for preventing depressive recurrences in older populations of patients, and microdoses could be effective in decreasing suicide risk, especially in patients with BD. Conversely, lithium’s ability to counteract cognitive decline appears to be exerted at subtherapeutic doses, possibly corresponding to its molecular neuroprotective effects. Indeed, lithium may reduce inflammation and induce neuroprotection even at doses several folds lower than those commonly used in clinical settings. Nevertheless, findings surrounding its purported mechanism of action are missing, and more research is needed to investigate the molecular targets of low-dose lithium adequately.

The present status of clinical leg ulcer healing research was reviewed by 25 experts over 2 days on September 28 and 29, 2015. Multiple clinical effectiveness reviews were presented suggesting that published clinical wound healing research often does not meet present (2015) evidence based standards. Specific areas requiring remediation were highlighted and approaches to overcoming existing challenges were proposed. Participants using anonymous voting technology developed an action plan to resolve perceived deficiencies. Statements were accepted if 75% of participants agreed. Older patients with a high frequency of comorbid conditions posed particular difficulties in designing clinical research protocols and better diagnostic categorization is necessary A standardized model template for collecting information about diagnosis and evaluation of the effect of interventions on healing of all types of leg ulcers was considered a high priority. Such a model template could be modified depending on the specific etiology of the leg ulcers. Generally agreed on quantifiable standards to establish degree of morbidity was considered a high priority. There was universal agreement that sources of funding and conflicts of interest needed to be disclosed in presentations and all publications. All clinical research studies should be registered with appropriate authorities. There was substantial enthusiasm for a clinical research network with quality standards for membership and an advisory research core available to investigators. Such a network should be funded and actively managed to insure long-term viability. The governance of such an entity needs to be established by the wound care community. The present trend to integrate patients into the clinical research process was endorsed and there was enthusiasm to develop patient advocacy for wound healing research.
