Abstract

This chapter discusses the planning for soft goals. The discussions of planning for soft goals have been performed in the context of agents that attempt to maximize the expected utility of their decisions. In such an approach, symbolic goals are replaced by utility functions, and plans are generated in a forward-directed fashion in such a way as to maximize the utility of the expected outcome of the plan. For example, goal number 8 in list of goals, catching the earliest train possible, would be handled by constructing a utility function which has a higher value the earlier the agent got to the train station. The agent would then search through the possible sequences of actions it could perform to get to the station, and choose the plan which maximizes the utility. This is a fairly straightforward application of forward-directed planning to soft goals. In some situations, a straightforward form of goal regression can be used for soft goals.
