Abstract

This article seeks to assess how operational research tools can help in strategic decision-making in urban logistics. Both local authorities and carriers need to define new logistics organization plans dedicated to urban areas. We first recall what urban logistics is and introduce Urban Logistics Spaces. We then describe two operational research models, the network design problem and the facility location problem, able to answer many strategic questions in logistics. We give examples where these models have been used for urban logistics. Finally, we conclude with a critical look at these models and the necessary multidisciplinary approach to deal with the strategic challenges of urban logistics.
