Abstract

Chapters 2, 3, and 4 discuss how index modulation operates based on constellation and code resources. In this chapter, we focus on the implementation of pilot-based index modulation for orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM). The idea of information-guided pilot insertion OFDM (IGPI-OFDM) is proposed, in which the pilot positions are selected according to the information bits to be transmitted. This idea can be used for either carrier phase tracking or channel estimation purpose. Three different types of pilot position selection (PPS) schemes, which result in equal-spaced, unequal-spaced, and hybrid pilot placements, are studied, and the corresponding pilot position detection (PPD) methods are designed.
