Abstract

For over a century, Chicago has played organized soccer. This essay surveys Chicago soccer in the first decade of the twentieth century. It details how three English soccer tours from 1905–09 revitalized a declining Chicago Football Association, while encouraging soccer's growth in the adult leagues, schools and parks. The final tour shines a light on native‐born talent notably in Coal City, Illinois and suggests how local success also carried over into the leagues. Following the tours, Chicago soccer flourished in these areas and has continued through to the present.
