Abstract

The dependence on distance of the exchange integrals J was investigated for the first and second nearest Cr 3+-pairs in ruby by uniaxial pressure along the C 3-axis. With the experimentally determined values of ΔJ Δr , the corresponding exchange integrals in ruby and Cr 2O 3 could be assimilated and the biquadratic term in the exchange interaction could be explained by exchange striction.
