Abstract
Often unwittingly, scientific theory relies heavily upon literary metaphors which influence both the motives and the consequences of scientific endeavor. Human ecologists would do well to assess the implications of conventional metaphors which have been popular in traditional science, and to consider a newer picaresque mode better suited to the complexities of human ecology and to the temperament of modern consciousness.
