Abstract

Psychiatric residents with physical disabilities have difficulties in dealing with integrating their handicap into their self-image as a physician. Responses to physical disability from a paranoid position interfere with learning, whereas responses from a depressive position allow for maturation. The outcome of training depends on the nature of the loss, the personality characteristics of the resident, and the sensitivity of supervision.
