Abstract

Abstract A description is provided for Phyllachora canavaliae . Information is included on the disease caused by the organism, its transmission, geographical distribution, and hosts. HOSTS: Only recorded from Canavalia villosa . DISEASE: Infects living leaves of Canavalia , causing an inconspicuous leaf spot. Nothing is known about the development of the disease, but in Costa Rica, ascomata are mature in February. GEOGRAPHICAL DISTRIBUTION: Only known from the type locality in Costa Rica. TRANSMISSION: This has not been studied, but probably occurs by direct infection of leaves from air-dispersed ascospores, in common with other species of Phyllachora . On landing on the new host leaf, the ascospore germinates to produce an appressorium and infection peg.
