Abstract
The Personal Handy-phone System (PHS) started operating in Japan in July 1995 and there were over 4.6 million users as of November 1996; it is now spreading to other countries in Asia and Oceania. We have developed the PHS with packet data communications (PHS-PD). It provides packet-switched data communications services in addition to existing voice services. This paper overviews PHS-PD and proposes the optimum protocol stack. The proposed stack provides high performance when connected to various public/private networks, and easy Internet access from the mobile environment. A PHS-PD experimental system is introduced.
