Abstract
Abstract Phraseology is a domain of linguistic study which to a high degree illustrates the correlation between language and culture. In a typological approach, it is necessary to define and classify the types of cultural information which are illuminated by lexical collocations. Clearly, the recent development of cognitive linguistics and conceptual analysis in the 1980s and 1990s can provide a reliable foundation for this kind of investigation. A further important reason why cultural information should be included in an account of linguistic meanings concerns the needs of lexicography today. For the practical purposes of compiling a dictionary oflexical collocations, a number of theoretical points must be elucidated concerning the general problem of cultural markedness.
