Abstract

Since 2010, the system of regulating the use of OTC medicines has been implemented in Ukraine through the approval of the pharmaceutist protocols. This is an effective tool for informational support of specialists in the pharmacy on the principles of EBM and patients-oriented using of medicines. To evaluate the current state of pharmaceutical assistance (PA) implementation in Ukrainian pharmacies and identify lacks in its practical implementation. A survey of pharmacy specialists in 280 pharmacies was carried out in 10 Ukrainian regions using the questionnaire ‘Self-assessment tool for pharmaceutical care`. It was developed by CD-P-PH, CD-P-PH/PC and adapted for Eastern European countries. The evaluation of the results was carried out using statistical methods. It was found that the highest quality of PA is provided when OTC drugs are released, and the quality of PA in the release of Rx drugs and the provision of diagnostic services in most of the pharmacies under investigation is assessed as unsatisfactory. Assessment of the five factors of quality assurance of the PA has shown that the actual state of their implementation is low. This result may be explained by the fact that during the release of OTC drugs, experts can use pharmaceutist protocols approved by the MoH of Ukraine. The conducted analysis of the state of PA implementation in pharmacies showed that there is a need for further development of pharmaceutist protocols for supporting pharmaceutical specialists to provide PA not only at the release of OTC drugs but also Rx drugs.
