Abstract

Photoneutron reactions occur in detectors placed in high energy X-ray beams provided the beam energy is greater than the photoneutron threshold of the detector materials. Order of magnitude calculations of photoneutron yields per gram were made for silicon, oxygen, aluminium and carbon irradiated by bremsstrahlung beams with energies of 15, 18, 20, 24 MeV respectively. Using these calculations the photonuclear production in two detectors (NE 213 and 8″ polyethylene spherical rem-meter) were calculated. The significance of the results for the dosimetry of mixed neutron and high energy photon fields is discussed.
