Abstract

ESR of Tl 2+ in DMSO-H 2O glass and alkali silicate glasses were studied to examine the probing ability of the (Tl +) + ESR center for alkali sites and the chemistry of “inert pair” characteristic of p-block elements in a lower valency state. Tl 2+ reflected sensitively the distortion of the coordination sphere of alkali sites even in the “weak” network of DMSO-H 2O glass. Two distinct sites were detected for alkali sites in silicate glasses; one is in highly anisotropic environments (α) and the other in nearly spherical symmetry (β). It was found that “inert pair” is not inert stereochemically in α sites.
