Abstract

We report first experimental observation of photogenerated confined charged solitons in a chain of short polyene system, poly(phenylacetylene). The inter-chain charge separation allowed us to observe the photoinduced activity. The effective correlation energy at the soliton site is estimated to be ∼0.6 eV corresponding to the bare on-site Coulomb energy U o≈3.6 eV. We found that the lattice relaxation effect is important even in a short polyene.
