Abstract

Abstract We report new experimental results of photoexcitation and doping studies on a chain of short polyene system, poly(phenylacetylene). We found that charged solitons are elementary excitations in short polyenes and confined within the conjugate polyene segments. Effective correlation energy at soliton site is estimatedto be ∼ 0.6 eV corresponding to bare on-site Coulomb energy Uo ≥ 4.0 eV.
