Abstract

Photodegradation of poly(vinyl chloride)/polyurethane (PVC/PU) blends was carried out and the effects of the blend ratio, thickness and irradiation atmosphere were examined by means of ultraviolet-visible and infrared spectrophotometry. Blend films thicker than 10 μm were more stable to photodegradation than either homopolymer, and the two components mutually retarded each other. The results obtained suggested that the retardation phenomena are largely dependent on the physical properties, especially the ultraviolet light absorptivity and the oxygen permeability of the component polymers. Thus, the higher light absorptivity of the PU and the lower oxygen permeability of the PVC are responsible for the photodegradation behavior of the PVC/PU blends.
