Abstract

Abstract The photochemical reaction (λ irr =435 nm) of 12 vanadium(V) chelates of the general formula VO(BH) 2 OR (where BH is the benzohydroxamate ligand and RH, CH 3 , C 2 H 5 , CH 2 CH 2 CH 3 , CH(CH 3 ) 2 , (CH 2 3 CH 3 , CH 2 CH(CH 3 ) 2 , C(CH 3 ) 3 , (CH 2 ) 4 CH 3 , (CH 2 )CH(CH 3 ) 2 , (CH 2 ) 5 CH 3 and CH 2 CH 2 OH) was studied. In all cases photolysis proceeds in a first-order fashion to yield the vanadium(IV) chelate VO(BH) 2 identified by UV-visible and IR spectroscopy. The quantum yields of photodecompositions (φ d ) and the reactivity ratio (κ/κ −1 ) of these complexes were determined and their variation with the nature of the R group in the complex was investigated. The inductive effect of the R group, which influences the nature of the VO and VOR bonds, also affects φ d and a correlation between the VO stretching frequency (ν v=0 ) and φ d was found.
