Abstract

GaN-ZnO and ZnGeN2-ZnO solid solutions are presented as effective photocatalysts for overall water splitting under visible light. Both solid solutions have wurtzite-type crystal structure and smaller band gaps of 2.4-2.8 eV (depending on composition) than those of the corresponding end compounds (GaN, 3.4 eV; ZnO, 3.2 eV; ZnGeN2, 3.3 eV). The narrower band gap of the solid solutions is attributed to the presence of zinc and oxygen species in the material. The photocatalytic activity of the solid solutions for overall water splitting is strongly dependent on both the cocatalyst and the crystallinity and composition of the material. The quantum efficiency of the solid solutions modified with Rh and Cr mixed-oxide nanoparticles as H2 evolution sites is 2-6 % at 420-440 nm.
