Abstract

Core–shell NPs of Au and Ag (Ag@Au NPs) were prepared by successive addition of Silver Nitrate AgNO3 and Chloroauric acid (HAuCl4) with sodium citrate. Optical absorption studies using UV–Visible spectrophotometer indicates dominant absorption by Au shell. Analysis of morphology and size distribution of Ag@Au NPs using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) clearly shows the core and shell structure with a core diameter around 10 nm and a shell thickness of nearly 8 nm. Furthermore, we investigate the photocatalytic activity of these nanoparticles by irradiating the aqueous solutions of dyes containing Ag@Au NPs with sunlight. The results were compared with the photocatalytic activity of Ag NPs. Our results indicate that the photocatalytic activity of Ag@Au NPs is comparable to pure Ag NPs for the degradation of organic dye molecules on irradiation with sunlight.
