Abstract

• Available reports on marine phospholipids (PLs) extraction were reviewed. • SC-CO 2 technique was found efficient for marine PLs extraction. • Marine PLs demonstrate twofold functions of PLs and ω-3 PUFAs. • Marine PLs are potential candidates for various industrial formulations. Marine phospholipids (PLs) rich in ω-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) have drawn keen interest recently among the researchers and consumers, and could be assumed as amazing compounds for pharmacological roles. Due to containing ω-3 PUFAs, marine PLs are highly prone to oxidation in conventional extractions accomplished by the incorporation of organic solvents, exposure to atmospheric oxygen, and high temperature. Considering this, supercritical carbon dioxide (SC-CO 2 ) extraction process is recommended by researchers for many advantages. Many reports revealed that SC-CO 2 extraction of marine PLs is an efficient method which ensures superior product quality compared to conventional extractions. Although marine PLs are more advantageous than terrestrial PLs and are competent candidate for various applications, surprisingly its’ industrial applications is very rare. There is a wide scope of marine PLs utilization in various fields. Therefore, more investigations are recommended to utilize marine phospholipids in food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic industries for daily applications.
