Abstract

Superconducting Al tunnelling junctions of film thicknesses of only about 30Åin parallel magnetic fields up to 5 T were used as phonon generators and detectors. The I-V characteristics of these tunnelling junctions show Zeeman splitting of the energy gap according to the splitting of states with parallel and antiparallel spin. The dependence of the detection signal on the magnetic field in phonon spectroscopy and phonon pulse measurements indicates a spin-flip induced by transverse phonons.
