Abstract

The phase transformation of cubic stabilized zirconia in real SOFC stacks, especially in regions along the anode/electrolyte interface, was investigated by micro-Raman spectroscopy. In some real stacks, phase transformation of cubic stabilized zirconia into tetragonal phase was observed at the electrolyte/anode interface and/or in the anode after long time operation. On the other hand, in electrolyte, phase transformation was rarely observed. Bearing in mind the possible effect of Ni dissolution on phase transformation of zirconia, in parallel, a study was also carried out. NiO doped cubic zirconia was partially transformed into tetragonal phase, but transformation was not observed for cubic zirconia without NiO dissolution. It was clear that phase transformation was enhanced by NiO dissolution into the cubic stabilized zirconia.
