Abstract

Previously unknown phase equilibria in the system Gd 2O 3-Al 2O 3-SiO 2 at 1400 and 1300 °C were determined using X-ray diffraction, SEM-EDX and EPMA. The following six quasibinary phases are observed: Gd 4Al 2O 9, GdAlO 3, Gd 2SiO 5, Gd 9.33(SiO 4) 6O 2, Gd 2Si 2O 7 and 3Al 2O 3·2SiO 2 (mullite). Additionally, there are two extended ternary solid solutions, Gd 9.33+2 x (Si 1− x Al x O 4) 6O 2 (with x=0−∼0.33) and Gd 4Al 2(1− x)Si 2 x O 9+ x (with x=0−∼0.3), that are based on the quasibinary phases Gd 9.33(SiO 4) 6O 2 and Gd 4Al 2O 9, respectively. No quasiternary compound was detected. The ternary eutectic temperature was measured at 1306±5 °C by high-temperature STA and DSC. The results are compared with the scarce data available for other RE 2O 3-Al 2O 3-SiO 2 (RE=rare earth element) systems.
